Machu Picchu: The “Wonder” That Nearly Took Us Out 🇵🇪🏔️
If you’re looking for a relaxing vacation, do not try to visit Machu Picchu during a national protest. We officially checked off the “hardest World Wonder to get to,” and let me tell you—the universe really made us work for this one.
The Good Part: The Views
Machu Picchu itself? Absolutely breathtaking. It’s one of those rare places that actually looks better in person than on a postcard. We saw it, we loved it, we took the photos, and we felt like world-class explorers.
…And then the universe said, “Okay, playtime is over.”
The “Amazon Rainforest Trek” (Not by choice)
Because of the Cusco riots and transport strikes, our easy trip back turned into a survival movie. We ended up trekking through the Amazon rainforest for hours in the pouring rain. My “adventure look” quickly transitioned into “drowned rat” status.
The Great Escape
After our jungle hike, the chaos really began:
- The Getaway Car: We hopped into a total stranger’s car just to get moving. 🚗💨
- The Mudslide: Nature decided a mountain should be in the middle of the road. We got stopped by a massive mud and rock slide.
- The Blockades: Once we cleared the mud, we were stopped by protesters and rioters blocking the paths.
12 Hours Later…
What should have been a quick trip back to Cusco took us 12 grueling hours. We arrived exhausted, soaked, and wondering if we had accidentally signed up for The Amazing Race: Extreme Edition.
Final Verdict: Machu Picchu is a 10/10 wonder, but the commute? 0/10. Do we recommend it? Yes. Do we recommend checking the news before you go? Strong yes. 😅⛰️⛈️
