Love is in the Air (Literally): Our Cappadocia Engagement Story

Some places are so magical you visit them once and check them off the list. Then there’s Cappadocia.

We’ve traveled to this lunar landscape twice now, and honestly? We’d go back a third time tomorrow. Between the fairy chimneys, the subterranean cities, and the sky full of giant floating ornaments, it’s a place that feels less like a country and more like a dream.

The Cappadocia Ritual: ATV’s, Caves, and Flying Dresses

Every time we touch down in central Turkey, we have a bit of a routine. First, we get dirty. There is nothing like renting ATVs and tearing through Rose Valley, kicking up dust and dodging ancient rock formations. It’s the perfect mix of “adventure” and “I hope I don’t flip this thing.”

After the adrenaline rush, we go deep—literally. Exploring the ancient caves and underground cities is a must. It’s surreal to think about the history carved into those stones while we’re just wandering through with our cameras.

And of course, it wouldn’t be an Ira and Angela trip without the “Flying Dress” photoshoot. If you’ve seen those iconic photos of dresses with 20-foot trains billowing against a backdrop of hot air balloons, that’s Angela. Yes, it’s extra. Yes, it’s a workout for the person holding the fabric. And yes, the photos are worth every penny.

The Big Surprise: More Than Just a Sunrise

On our most recent trip, Ira decided to turn the “impulsive travel” dial up to eleven.

Unknown to Angela, Ira had been orchestrating a massive secret for months. He didn’t just book a nice dinner; he hired a full videography and photography crew and secretly flew his mom and aunt across the world to witness the moment.

The stakes were high. In Cappadocia, the hot air balloons only fly if the wind is perfect. For days, the balloons were grounded due to bad weather. Ira was sweating—not just from the nerves of the ring in his pocket, but from the fear that his “epic backdrop” wouldn’t take flight.

The "Yes" at the Last Second

It was the very last day of the trip. The sun started to peek over the horizon, and miraculously, the balloons began to inflate. It was the only day they flew that week.

Amongst the roar of the burners and the silence of the morning sky, Ira dropped to one knee. Surrounded by family and captured on film, Angela said YES! We left Cappadocia not just with more dust on our boots and photos in our gallery, but with a fiancé and a fiancée. It was the ultimate budget-travel win: a priceless moment in a place that already felt like heaven.

Hi there!
